No. 1 UCLA Makes History, Claims Victory In Season's First Two Matches

Laie, HI - UCLA's top-ranked men's water polo team began the 2005 season in magnificent fashion on Saturday afternoon with wild 30-2 win over Division II opponent Chaminade before dispatching of No. 16 BYU-Hawaii 15-4 later in the day. The win marks just the third time in UCLA water polo history that a team has scored 30 goals in a match.
The UCLA record for most goals in a contest is 39, set back in 1970 against Air Force. In 1971, the Bruins scored 37 against Washington in an NCAA Tournament match. The most goals scored since then was 27, a feat accomplished by the Bruins in both 1988 against LMU and in 1990 against Bucknell.
Redshirt freshmen Russell Simpkins and Christopher Allen led all scorers with four goals apiece in their collegiate debuts against Chaminade. Junior goalkeeper Will Didinger tallied seven saves for the Bruins in the first game.
Against BYU Hawaii, Matt Jacobs led UCLA with three goals while Didinger collected six more saves.
The Bruins outscored Chaminade and BYU Hawaii 45-6 in the seasons' first two games.
