
Bruins Defeat No. 28 Boise State, 6-1

LOS ANGELES - The fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team ran its winning streak to 11 in a row dating back to last season, posting a 6-1 victory over No. 28 Boise State Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins now take a 3-0 record into next week's matches with No. 19 Cal and No. 14 Stanford in the Bay Area. Boise State, which lost by the same score to No. 9 Pepperdine on Thursday, falls to 0-2.
After an 8-2 UCLA victory at court No. 2 and an 8-3 decision in Boise State's favor at the No. 3 spot, the Bruins managed to clinch the doubles point with a win at the No. 1 position. UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel upset seventh-ranked Luke Shields/Thomas Schoeck, 8-5, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Shortly after singles play began, Kohlloeffel proved why he's considered one of the nation's top players, as he dispatched of the 13th-ranked Shields, 6-0, 6-0. Kohlloeffel, who is listed at No. 3 in the latest ITA Singles Rankings, owns an impressive 20-2 record since fall play began.
Junior Chris Surapol and 75th-ranked Mathieu Dehaine were next to finish, clinching the match for UCLA. Surapol downed Eric Roberson, 6-1, 6-2 at court No. 4, while Dehaine recorded the clincher with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Clancy Shields at court No. 3. Bruin sophomore Jeremy Drean was also a straight-set winner Friday.
Boise State's lone point on the afternoon came at court No. 6, where Ehren Vaughan downed Aaron Yovan, 6-4, 7-5. Bruin freshman Haythem Abid capped off the match for UCLA at court No. 2, fighting back from a set down to eventually defeat Schoeck, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).
The Bruins head up to the Bay Area next week, taking on Cal on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Stanford on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
