
UCLA Rallies Past BYU in Five Games

The sixth-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team won its first conference match by rallying past BYU in five games at Pauley Pavilion Saturday night.
The Bruins won 26-30, 30-22, 25-30, 30-26, 19-17 in two hours and 13 minutes in front of 1,750 fans -- the largest home crowd of the season. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 5-4, 1-2 in MPSF play. The second-ranked Cougars suffered their first loss of the season in eight matches, and dipped to 5-1 in conference play.
Although the Bruins committed 32 service errors, they recorded just one in the final game, while earning three total blocks and hitting .333. In Game 5, the Cougars committed two service errors, hit just .250 and recorded only one block.
Five UCLA players recorded double-digit kills, led by junior Steve Klosterman's 16 (.400) and four total blocks. Seniors Damien Scott and Nick Scheftic and junior Paul George each added 14 kills. Senior David Russell led the Bruins with seven block assists and 10 kills (.381). Senior setter Dennis Gonzalez added 60 assists, eight digs and four total blocks.
For BYU, sophomore Ivan Perez recorded 20 kills, but was held to an attack percentage of .293 in 41 swings.
In team statistics, the Bruins out-blocked the Cougars 15.0-11.5. The Bruins hit .333 for the match and limited BYU to an attack percentage of .273.
UCLA travels to USC on Wed., Feb. 1 for a 7 p.m. league match. The Bruins return home on Fri., Feb. 3 for a non-league match against UC Santa Cruz at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
