Commerce, Calif. - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team used five second-quarter goals to help defeat fifth-ranked Stanford, 9-6, on the first day of the SoCal Tournament. Sophomore Krsto Sbutega led the charge for UCLA, tallying three goals to raise his team-leading season total to 17.

After having been swept by Stanford last season with three losses in as many meetings, UCLA (7-2, 1-0) has returned the favor in 2006. The Bruins knocked off the Cardinal, 7-6, in the third-place game of the NorCal Tournament on Sept. 17. UCLA also defeated Stanford, 10-8, in both schools' MPSF conference season-opener at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center on Sept. 30.

Stanford (6-5, 1-1) and UCLA entered the second quarter tied, 3-3. The Bruins outscored the Cardinal, 5-2, in the second frame to give UCLA an 8-5 advantage at halftime. In the third quarter, Stanford blanked the Bruins, 1-0, and UCLA promptly returned the favor in the fourth-quarter, notching one goal. The Bruins have now outscored their opponents 24-8 in the fourth quarter through nine games.

Senior defender Brad Greiner registered two goals for UCLA. Seniors Tyler Krikorian, Michael March and Logan Powell and junior Marco Santos each added one goal for the Bruins.

UCLA will face Long Beach State at 5:20 p.m. on Saturday at the Commerce Aquatics Center.
