Los Angeles, Calif. - In just his second game back after missing the first seven games of the year with a fractured metatarsal, UCLA sophomore forward David Estrada scored the game-winning goal in UCLA's 1-0 shutout victory over San Diego on Tuesday evening.

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Sinderhoff set up Estrada's goal. Just one minute after coming into the game, Sinderhoff took a shot that San Diego goalkeeper Kelin Briones got a hand on. Estrada, who was UCLA's top scorer last season with 12 goals, pounced on the rebound and put it away from five yards out for his first goal of the year at 36:54.

The Bruins went on the attack immediately in the second half. In the 47th minute, Chance Myers' shot after a Kyle Nakazawa corner kick was on its way towards the goal, but San Diego defender Ryan Peterman kicked it away for a backline save. Brad Rusin got the rebound but missed high. A minute later, Estrada made a run on the right side and nearly broke free past the goalkeeper, but Briones fouled him to stop the scoring opportunity and was issued a yellow card. The Bruins' ensuing free kick went high.

San Diego put pressure on the Bruins in the waning minutes but was thwarted by the Bruin defense. The Toreros' best chance late in the game came at 87:51, but Brett Hiroto's shot was blocked by UCLA midfielder Tony Beltran.

UCLA goalkeeper Brian Perk earned the shutout, his third of the year, making four saves, including an acrobatic stop of a Kyle Ochoa shot in the 66th minute. Briones had one save.

UCLA's record improves to 4-4-1, while San Diego drops to 3-5-0. The Bruins begin Pac-10 play on Saturday, Oct. 6 at San Diego State.
