UCLA Downs Oregon State, 2-1

Los Angeles, Calif. - The 24th-ranked UCLA men's soccer team struck early with a goal in the sixth minute and scored again at the end of the first half to provide the margin needed to defeat Oregon State, 2-1, at Marshall Field at Drake Stadium on Friday night. The victory was UCLA's fourth consecutive and runs the Bruins' record to 8-5-2, 4-1-1 in the Pac-10 Conference. Oregon State falls to 5-9-0, 2-4-0 in the Pac-10.
Sophomore forward David Estrada got UCLA off to a quick start with a 20-yard blast from the left side that curled into the far post to beat Oregon State goalkeeper Packy Deenihan at 5:53. With two and half minutes remaining in the first half, Maxwell Griffin doubled the Bruins' lead after redirecting a low-lined cross from Tony Beltran in front of the goal. Andrew Sinderhoff also assisted on the play.
Oregon State put forth a more offensive effort in the second half to try to get back in the game, recording eight shots in the half to the Bruins' two. The Beavers had good scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes of the game. In the 81st minute, Lloyd Fobi missed just wide in front of the goal, and at 81:30 Webb took a shot that Perk stopped. Seconds later, at 82:07, the Beavers broke through for a score, with Webb assisting his brother Mason Webb on a shot from the left side to the top right corner.
The Bruin defense held on in the final eight minutes, with Perk saving the Beavers' last attempt, a Mason Webb free kick from outside the box at 89:09. Perk finished the game with six saves on 12 shots, while Deenihan had one on the Bruins' nine shots.
With the victory, UCLA increases its point total in Pac-10 play to 13, four points ahead of idle second-place teams San Diego State and California.
Both UCLA and Oregon State will be in action on Sunday in Westwood, with Oregon State playing San Diego State at 1 pm on the North Athletic Field and UCLA hosting Washington at 2:30 pm at Drake Stadium.
