Bruins Down Ducks, 6-1

LOS ANGELES - Playing its first Pac-10 counting match of the season on Friday, the No. 11 UCLA men's tennis team had little trouble against unranked Oregon, posting a 6-1 victory over the Ducks at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins improve to 12-3 overall (1-0 in the Pac-10), while the Ducks fall to 8-7 (0-1 Pac-10).
UCLA jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. After recording an 8-2 victory at the No. 2 spot, followed by an 8-3 win at court No. 3, the Bruins' top team of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel scraped out an 8-7(0) decision over Francisco Gallardo/Marcos Verdasco at court No. 1. With the win, Gruendler and Kohlloeffel, ranked No. 13 nationally, improve to 17-0 this season, including a 14-0 mark in dual-match play.
The Bruins dominance continued in singles play, as Kohlloeffel put the Bruins ahead 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 decision against Verdasco at court No. 1. That victory was followed by Michael Look at court No. 4, as he notched a 6-3, 6-2 win against Oregon's Mike Myrhed. UCLA's Haythem Abid clinched the match for the Bruins at court No. 2, downing Alexander Cornelissen, 6-4, 6-3.
UCLA's Jaysen Chung picked up the first dual-match win of his career on Friday, as the redshirt junior came in at No. 6 singles to defeat Eric Pickard, 6-4, 6-1. The Bruins' other singles win came from Chris Surapol at court No. 3, as he battled back to take a 4-6, 7-5, (15-13) win over Ric Mortera.
Oregon's lone point on the day came at court No. 5, where Geoff Embry downed Bruin junior Jeremy Drean, 6-2, 6-4. The Bruins return to action tomorrow, hosting Washington beginning at 1:00 p.m.
