Men's Volleyball Splits In Santa Barbara

Bruins Ace Wesmen in Five

December 30, 2009 | Men's Volleyball

Dec. 30, 2009

In a final preseason tune-up before the 2010 campaign, the UCLA men's volleyball team outlasted visiting Winnipeg in five games Wednesday night.

The Bruins won 30-25, 30-23, 29-31, 26-30, 16-14 in two hours and 13 minutes in front of 187 fans in Pauley Pavilion.

Two players who saw little time last season were key performers for UCLA: 2008 letterman Dylan Bowermaster and Kyle Caldwell, who earned a letter at opposite last season. Bowermaster hammered 19 kills (.452) and led all players with 24.0 points, while Caldwell, starting at setter, pounded 12 kills (.733), served six aces and recorded three total blocks for 20.0 points. Had the match not been an exhibition, Caldwell's kills, aces and points would have been a school record for a setter.

As it was, the Bruins served 19 aces, another mark that would have been a school single match record.

Also scoring in double digits for UCLA were sophomore Jack Polales, who recorded 13.5 points, primarily on eight kills and five aces, and third-year sophomore Jeremy Casebeer, who added 11 kills and three total blocks for 12.5 points. Casebeer started for senior Garrett Muagututia, who was ill.

The Bruins hit .347 with 71 kills and limited the Wesmen to 53 kills. Justin Duff led Winnipeg with 18 kills (.484) and 23.0 points. Winnipeg out-blocked the Bruins. 15.5-7.5.
