Los Angeles, Calif. - A far post beauty by midfielder Evan Raynr in the 72nd minute was all UCLA needed to avenge last week's loss to Stanford, giving the 11th-ranked Bruins a 1-0 win in front of 1,205 at Drake Stadium on Friday evening.
Raynr had just re-entered the game a minute earlier and made an immediate impact, breaking the scoreless tie at 71:45. After receiving a pass to the left side from Eder Arreola, Raynr fired a shot far post to the right corner that went past a diving Jason Dodson. The goal was Raynr's third of the season and his second game-winner.
The Cardinal nearly tied up the score in the 80th minute after a free kick by Ryan Thomas deflected off a Bruin defender and off the post. But the Bruins cleared the ball out and dominated possession for the final 10 minutes, recording five shots, three that were saved by Dodson and another two that just missed wide.
Prior to Raynr's goal, Stanford came close to scoring on two different occasions, with passes in front of goal just missing the target in the 62nd and 72nd minutes. The Bruins also had near-misses on headers in the first minute by Zack Foxhoven off a corner kick, in the 12th minute by Andy Rose off another corner kick, and in the 36th minute on a Reed Williams header that hit the crossbar.
UCLA outshot Stanford in the game, 19-7, with Brian Rowe making one save to earn his seventh shutout of the year. Dodson made seven saves for the Cardinal.
UCLA improves to 10-3-1 overall and regains sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 with a 5-1-0 record. Stanford drops to 7-6-0, 3-3-0 in the conference. The Bruins will host California on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 2 pm in a pivotal conference game. UCLA has a two-point lead over California in the conference standings. The Golden Bears dropped to second place after a 1-1 tie with San Diego State Friday afternoon.
