
Bruins Fall in Five at Pepperdine

Seventh-ranked UCLA fell in five games to No.2 Pepperdine Wednesday night in Malibu.
The Waves won 30-24, 25-30, 30-21, 23-30, 15-10 in front of 942 fans in two hours and eight minutes at Firestone Fieldhouse. UCLA lost its first match since March 5 and saw its record fall to 14-10 overall and 9-8 in league play. Pepperdine improved to 14-6, 12-5. With the victory, Pepperdine remained within striking distance of the league title and the all-important home court advantage in the conference playoffs. The Bruins remained in sixth place in the MPSF race.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance by UCLA fifth-year senior Brett Perrine, who hammered a career-high of 20 kills (.576) and added two block assists for 21.0 points. Perrine entered the match in Game 1 and quickly established himself with six kills. Another UCLA star was third-year sophomore Ryal Jagd, who came off the bench to record 10 kills (.500) and two aces for 12.0 points. Jagd also took 23 serves without an error and dug six balls.
Sophomore Jack Polales also pounded 20 kills and senior Garrett Muagututia added 18 (.306). Senior setter Kevin Ker scored eight points on two kills, four aces and three total blocks. Libero Tom Hastings led both teams with 10 digs.
Cory Riecks led Pepeprdine with 17 kills, followed by 15 apiece from J.D. Schleppenbach and Maurice Torres.
The Bruins' road trip continues Sat., Apr. 3 with a match against USC at the Galen Center at 7 p.m.
