Los Angeles, Calif. - Evan Raynr's golden goal in the 95th minute gave No. 17 UCLA a 3-2 victory over San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium. The sophomore midfielder scored from eight yards out to improve UCLA's record to 4-1-1 on the year. With the loss, San Diego falls to 1-3-1.
San Diego had the initial lead in the game, scoring at 12:19 after a steal by Stephen Posa in the midfield. Posa sent a through ball to Marcelo Carminatti on the left side, and Carminatti finished from six yards out. The Toreros nearly made it 2-0 in the 35th minute, but UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe made a save on Sergio Lopez's header in the box.
UCLA evened the score just before halftime. After receiving a pass from Andrew Tusaazemajja, Bruin midfielder Kelyn Rowe made a spin move in the box and shot to the left corner at 44:26, beating San Diego goalkeeper Michael D'Arrigo for his third goal in as many games. Patrick Matchett was credited with an assist along with Tusaazemajja.
The Bruins moved ahead 2-1 at 54:48 when Kelyn Rowe and Victor Chavez combined for the go-ahead goal. Rowe had a free kick that was blocked by a San Diego defender, but the ball went right back to him, and he sent it into Chavez in the box. Chavez headed the ball past D'Arrigo for his second goal of the year. UCLA's lead didn't last long, however. Just two minutes later, at 56:41, Carminatti scored again after a corner kick, kicking in a high ball in the box with his back to the goal to even the score.
Both teams had good chances to move ahead in regulation. In the 58th minute, Chavez had a shot that hit the crossbar and pinged off the left post. A minute after that, the Bruins had a flurry of shots blocked by the Toreros. First Shawn Singh had a shot blocked by a defender. The rebound went to Ryan Hollingshead just in front of the goal, but D'Arrigo was there to make the save. Posa had a 1-v-1 opportunity with just Brian Rowe to beat in the 76th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar, and in the 83rd minute, Posa's shot was saved by Rowe. The Bruin goalkeeper made another good save on a shot by Daniel Meade in the 85th minute.
UCLA ended the overtime period in less than five minutes, with Andy Rose and Chavez combining on passes that led to Raynr's first goal of the season at 94:44.
The Bruins will next play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 24.
