UCLA Overcomes 2-0 Deficit to Finish Third at Santa Barbara Invitational

The UCLA men's volleyball team won a thriller over Long Beach State to earn third place at the 47th annual Santa Barbara Invitational.
The Bruins won 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-13) to capture third place in the tournament. UCLA is now 2-1 as they prepare for the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii next week.
The Bruins were plagued by 11 service errors in the first two games and only managed to hit .107 in the first game alone. But the Bruins fought back, led by junior outside hitter Jeremy Casebeer's 14 kills. Freshman outside hitter Matt Hanley and junior quick hitter Nick Vogel chimed in with 11 and 9 kills respectively.
After falling down 2-0 in the match, UCLA fought back by winning the 3rd game 25-19 and the 4th game 25-16. They capitalized on a combined 14 attack errors by the 49ers in those sets to extend the match to a 5th game. In the 5th game, Vogel and Casebeer had two kills each to lead the Bruins to a 15-13 win. Junior setter Alex Scattareggia helped the cause with 7 assists in the set, giving him 46 on the day.
Scattareggia was also named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts in all three matches. Alex recorded 86 assists against UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State and was very instrumental in helping the Bruins earn third place.
The Bruins next match will be Thursday, January 8th against Penn State at the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Hawaii.
