Bruins Remain in Second at Gifford Collegiate Championship

The UCLA men's golf team remained in second place after 36 holes at the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, CA.
The Bruins posted a score of six-over par 361, 13 shots worse than their opening round number, and nine shots behind first-place USC. The Trojans increased their lead to 12 shots with a round of 352 (-3) on Tuesday. USC was leading at 697 (-13), followed by the Bruins at 709 (-1). Virginia was third at 722 (+12), followed by Oregon at 725 (+15) and fifth-place Washington at 726 (+16). The Gifford Collegiate Championship is five-out-of-six scoring.
Individually, sophomore Patrick Cantlay was tied for first place at nine-under par 133 with USC's Steve Lim. Cantlay, who set a tournament record with a 63 (-8) on Monday, carded a 70 (-1) on Tuesday. Lim fired a 67 (-4). Cantlay recorded three birdies, two bogeys and 26 putts in the second round. He hit six of 14 fairways and eight of 18 greens in regulation.
Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim and junior Pontus Widegren were tied for 13th at 144 (+2). Kim posted a 74 (+3) and Widegren added a 70 (-1). Tied for 20th at 145 (+3) was junior Pedro Figueiredo at 145 (+3) following a round of 75 (+4) on Tuesday. Junior Mario Clemens was tied for 35th at 149 (+7) following a second round score of 72 (+1) and sophomore Anton Arboleda was tied for 44th at 151 (+9).
Three UCLA freshmen are also competing as individuals. Matt Pinizzotto was tied for 13th place at 144 (+2) following his round of 73 (+2). Jay Hwang and Preston Valder were tied for 40th at 150 (+8). Valder posted a 73 (+2) and Hwang carded a 76 (+5). Junior Bobby Lange was tied for 59th at 155 (+13).
