Primm Advances To 800m Final At NCAA Championships

Senior Cory Primm, the top-ranked 800m runner in the nation, moved one step closer to an NCAA title on the opening day of the 2011 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, IA as he advanced out of the semifinal rounds. Primm picked up an automatic spot in Friday's final after finishing second in heat one of the semifinals (top 2 in each heat automatically qualify) in a time of 1:47.43. He was eighth overall and will race for UCLA's first outdoor 800m crown on Friday afternoon.
The 4x100m relay team of juniors Jamal Alston and Karlton Rolle, sophomore Maxwell Dyce and freshman R.J. Frasier ran out of lane seven in heat one, clocking a season-best 39.45 for the third fastest time in the heat. The relay's previous season-best was 39.63. They finished 10th overall and do not advance to the event final on Saturday. Although they did not advance to the finals, the foursome still earns USTFCCCA All-America Second-Team honors.
Freshman Mike Woepse cleared the opening height of 16-4.25 in the pole vault on his first attempt, but could not clear the second bar (16-10.75). He finished the competition in a tie for 20th-place and will earn USTFCCCA All-America Honorable Mention honors for his effort.
In the discus, senior Bo Taylor finished 13th overall with a throw of 177-0. With today's finish, Taylor earned the first All-America honor of his career as he will receive USTFCCCA All-America Second-Team accolades.
Competition continues on Thursday with Alec Faldermeyer competing in the hammer (1:00 pm PST) and Dyce in the 200m semifinal (3:45 pm PST).
