UCLA junior Tiffany Lua led her top-ranked Bruins into a second-place tie following the opening round of the PING/ASU Invitational Friday at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, AZ.
The two-year letterwinner posted a first round score of 68 (-3) that kept the Bruins four shots behind No. 5 Arizona State, which posted a team score of 280 (-4). UCLA (284, E) was tied with Stanford and led fourth-place UC Davis (286, +2) by two shots. UNLV and Texas A&M were tied for fifth at 287 (+3).
Starting on the back nine, Lua made birdies on her fourth, fifth and seventh holes to make the turn in three-under par. She played the inward nine in even par with a birdie and a bogey.
Senior Brianna Do, junior Lee Lopez and sophomore Ani Gulugian were all tied for 22nd after posting scores of one-over par 72. Lopez was even par on the outward nine and one-over par on the inward side, making bogeys on her 15th and 17th holes to go along with a birdie at the 10th. Gulugian was three-over on her front nine with three bogeys, but rebounded with a pair of birdies at her 10th and 16th holes. Do also was three over on her front nine, which included a double-bogey at her fourth hole, but rallied on the inward side with a pair of birdies at her 13th and 16th holes.
Freshman Erynne Lee posted a 73 (+2), her first dropped score of the season, and was tied for 37th. Lee never seemed to rally from a double bogey at her seventh hole, playing her back nine in even par.
Tied for first place individually were Arizona State's Justine Lee and UNLV's Bethany Calvo at four-under par 67.
Second round play continues Saturday at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
