
Bruins Third in Santa Cruz as Darkness Falls

Darkness fell among the California Pines in Santa Cruz on Saturday and the fourth-ranked UCLA men's golf team was in third place after finishing 36 holes at the 66th annual Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
At 15-over par, the Bruins were 10 shots behind Texas (705, +5) and two shot below Stanford (713, +13). The Bruins posted scores of 351-364--715. Their first round score, which was one-over par, led Texas by one shot. USC was fourth at 722 (+22), followed by Cal at 735 (+35).
The Western Intercollegiate is a five-player, count six format over 54 holes.
Sophomore Patrick Cantlay, fresh from his low amateur finish at the Masters, was tied for fourth place at even par after posting rounds of 69-71--140. Senior Alex Shi Yup Kim was 14th after carding a pair of 71s. Tied for 17th place at 144 (+4) were freshman Jay Hwang and Anton Arboleda. Hwang signed for scores of 68-76 and Arboleda posted a pair of 72s. Juniors Pedro Figueiredo (71-76--147, +7) and Pontus Widegren (76-74--150, +10) were tied for 27th and 43rd, respectively.
New Mexico State's Justin Shin was in first place at three-under par, 137 after carding rounds of 68-69--137.
Final round action continues Sunday.
