BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 5 California in an MPSF match on Saturday afternoon. Becca Dorst scored a team-leading three goals for the Bruins, who had a 10-game winning streak snapped.
Breda Vosters led the host Golden Bears (17-6, 4-2 MPSF) with four goals.
California claimed a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and entered the second half with a 5-2 cushion.
UCLA (16-2, 5-1) closed the gap to 5-3 on Dorst's second goal of the match at 5:38 in the third quarter. California twice extended its advantage to three goals in the third period, entering the final quarter with a 7-4 cushion.
Vosters found the back of the cage with 6:24 left in regulation, putting the Golden Bears ahead of UCLA, 8-4. The Bruins reduced California's margin to 8-6 with goals from KK Clark (6:07) and Sarah Orozco (4:06).
UCLA's Caitlin Dement recorded nine saves in goal, while California's Lindsay Dorst was credited with eight saves.
The Bruins return to action with a pair of non-conference matches next weekend. UCLA plays at UC Irvine on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m. The Bruins take on Loyola Marymount on the road Sunday, April 15, at 12 p.m.
