Bruins Earn First Sweep Against Tigers

Fourth-ranked UCLA returned to the victory column Sunday afternoon with its first sweep of the season, blanking No. 14 Pacific in Stockton.
After averaging nearly two hours per match, the Bruins dispatched the Tigers in 75 minutes. Set scores were 25-22. 25-19, 25-12. UCLA improved to 7-4 overall, 3-2 in MPSF play. The Tigers fell to 3-3, 2-3.
In Set 1, the Bruins trailed 11-7 before Coach John Speraw called his first timeout. UCLA climbed back into it and tied the score at 18-18 on kills by junior Gonzalo Quiroga and freshman Clayton Paullin and a block by junior Spencer Rowe. An ace by setter Robart Page and a bad set by UOP forced the hosts to call their second timeout as the Bruins took a 21-18 lead. Coming out of the timeout, the Tigers got a kill from Taylor Hughes, but the Bruins scored two more points on a kill over the block by Page and another combo block from Page and Rowe. At 23-19, Pacific scored a pair of points, and UCLA called its second timeout. Quiroga got the final two points to give the Bruins the set.
In Set 2, UCLA took an early 4-1 lead on kills by Quiroga, Rowe and Page before Pacific called its first timeout. Two more kills from Quiroga and spikes by Paullin and Page gave the visitors a 9-4 lead. The hosts called their final timeout. Pacific made a run in the middle of the set, cutting a seven-point lead to three at 21-18 before Speraw called his first timeout. After the break, a service error by Pacific and a kill by Page gave UCLA a 23-19 lead. A kill from Quiroga and an ace from Michael Beals, who entered the match at set point, gave the Bruins a 2-0 sets advantage.
Pacific took a 2-0 lead in Set 3 before UCLA scored five straight points on three kills from junior Dane Worley and an ace from Bannan and a kill by Quiroga. From there, the Bruins padded their lead and were never threatened. Quiroga got the match winner.
Quiroga led the Bruins with 14 kills (.550), an ace and three block assists for 16.5 points. Page added 11 kills and 13.5 points followed by Paullin, who recorded career-highs of nine kills (.643) and 12.0 points. Worley also added nine points.
In team stats, the Bruins dominated, out-hitting the Tigers .402 to .227, out-blocking them 8.0-5.0 and out-serving them six aces to none.
Hughes led the Tigers with 15 kills (.600) and 16.0 points.
The Bruins return home Tuesday night (Jan. 29) to face defending NCAA champion UC Irvine at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The match will be televised live by the Pac-12 Networks.
