Fortunes for the UCLA women's golf team fell, then rose as the second round unfolded at the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge Tuesday at the Palos Verdes Golf Club.

In a tale of two nines, the Bruins played the outward nine in 14-over par -- nine-over after a drop score -- then composed themselves and played the inward nine in two under par. The final total showed the Bruins with a 36-hole score of 579 (+11), just one stroke behind top-ranked USC (578, +10). The Bruins were seven-over par on the day, a total that represented an inspirational rallying point.

Senior Tiffany Lua led the back nine charge. She was tied for fifth place with teammate Erynne Lee at 144 (+2). Both players posted one-over par scores of 72. Lua played her inward nine in two-under after going out in three-over. Lee was one-over on the back side, despite three birdies.

After playing her first nine in four-over par, senior Lee Lopez regrouped and carded a 34 (-2) coming in and stood in a tie for 10th at 146 (+4). Junior Ani Gulugian was five-over par on the day heading into her second nine, but sandwiched three birdies around a bogey for a two-under par back nine of 34. She was tied for 14th at five-over 147. Freshman Louise Ridderstrom, one-over par on the day through 14 holes, bogeyed three of the last four for a 75 (+4) and was tied for 10th at 146 (+4).

Duke's Alejandra Congrego continued to lead the field, posting her second straight score of 70 (-1) for a total of 140 (-2).
