Sparked by a hole-in-one from sophomore All-American Erynne Lee, UCLA built an eight-shot lead Monday entering the final round of the Bruin Wave Invitational at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, CA.
The 20th-ranked Bruins posted a two-under par 286 in the second round and wrestled the lead away from top-ranked USC, which posted a second round score of 301 (+13). After the morning round, the Trojans held a seven-shot advantage with a score of 290 (+2).
UCLA's 36-hole total was 583 (+7), followed by USC's 591 (+15). Arizona was third at 599 (+23), followed by co-host Pepperdine in fourth place at 611 (+35) and fifth-place Oklahoma State at 616 (+40).
Individually, the Bruins enjoyed a solid second round with Lee knocking an 8-iron into the cup at the 153-yard 16th. She then birdied the 17th to return to even par for her round and complete a three-under par spurt on the last three holes of the inward nine.
Lee managed to keep her sense of humor, despite an uncharacteristic 76 (+4) in the opening round.
"I was seven over (on the day) and that shot got me to five over," she chuckled. "I birdied the next hole and it turned out to be a good round."
She was tied for sixth at 148 (+4) with senior Tiffany Lua, who posted the same scores, 76-72. Lua had four birdies and four bogeys in her second round.
The best scores of the day belonged to senior Lee Lopez, who was one over par through 10 holes in her second round before making three birdies for a cool, two-under par 70 and the outright lead in the clubhouse at 140 (-2). Lopez won the Bruin Wave Invitational in 2011 at Robinson Ranch.
Freshman Louise Ridderstrom was tied for third at 145 (+1). She also recorded an even par 72 in round two. Ridderstrom nearly holed a 160-yard bunker shot from the ninth fairway; she missed the putt for birdie, but answered that miscue with birdies at the 10th and 11th holes to drop to two-under on the round. Two bogeys on her final holes pulled her back to even par.
Junior Ani Gulugian was tied for 15th at 151 (+7) after carding scores of 76-75. Freshman Jacquie LeMarr was tied for 53rd at 162 (+18).
