UCLA Erases Early Deficit, Defeats Marquette, 2-1

August 31, 2013 | Women's Soccer

No. 4 UCLA fell behind in the first minute of the game but took just four minutes to equalize and went on to defeat No. 20 Marquette, 2-1, in the first game of the Notre Dame adidas Invitational on Friday.

Marquette took a page out of the Bruins' week one playbook, scoring early in the game. Just 45 seconds in, Ashley Handwork finished from eight yards out after taking a feed from Taylor Madigan on the left wing. Despite facing the early deficit, the Bruins did not flinch, tying the score at 4:27 on a goal from 10 yards out by freshman Darian Jenkins. The score was Jenkins' team-leading third goal in as many games. Sarah Killion had the assist, her fourth of the year.

The game remained knotted until 60:59 when junior Sam Mewis put the Bruins ahead, 2-1, with her first goal of the season. Mewis took a pass from Taylor Smith, who had just re-entered the game, and shot from the top of the box into the left corner past Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel for the game-winner.

UCLA outshot Marquette, 19-13, in the game and 15-5 in the second half. Bruin goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland recorded four saves while earning the victory, including three stops in the second half.

The Bruins will next take on No. 7 Notre Dame on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 10:30am PT. The match will be streamed live on watchndtv.com.
