Bruins Fall to Stanford in SoCal Third-Place Game

October 13, 2014 | Men's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team dropped its second straight game, falling 7-6 to No. 2 Stanford in the third place game of the SoCal Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center.

Stanford jumped out to a 2-0 lead forcing the Bruins to play catch-up for most of the game.

Sophomore Chancellor Ramirez got the Bruins on the board with a power play goal at the 1:43 mark of the opening quarter to trim the lead to 2-1.

After another goal for the Cardinal made it 3-1, sophomore Jack Fellner added a power play goal (5:01) in the second period to cut it to 3-2. Then junior Danny McClintick tied it at 3-3 (2:28). But Stanford scored three straight goals to build a 6-3 lead midway into the third quarter.

Freshman Alex Roelse began a Bruin rally with a power play score (4:34) in the third and sophomore Ryder Roberts added a goal (7:23) early in the fourth to pull UCLA to within one (6-5).

Stanford's Nick Hoversten provided the Cardinal some cushion and ultimately the game-winner with a goal at the 5:26 mark of the fourth period to make it 7-5. But UCLA made things interesting when senior Cristiano Mirarchi scored with 2:53 to go to pull the Bruins to within one at 7-6. The Bruins made several key stops, but Stanford did as well down the stretch to provide the 7-6 final.

Sophomore Garrett Danner started in goal for the Bruins and played the entire game, making 10saves. Drew Holland played the entire game for Stanford and was also credited with 10 stops.
