No. 1 UCLA Tames the LMU Lions, 12-2

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 15-0 on the year with a 12-2 win over No. 17 Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improve to 26-0 all-time against LMU, which dropped to 3-9 on the year.

Senior Chris Fahlsing and Paul Reynolds each had a game-high three goals to lead the Bruins.

The Bruins dominated the first period, getting out to a 4-0 start. Senior Paul Reynolds scored first with his patented lob shot (7:15). Then junior Danny McClintick added a power play goal (6:15) to make it 2-0. Senior Cristiano Mirarchi then scored back-to-back counter attack goals to push the lead to 4-0 (4:31 and 2:01). 

UCLA put four more up on the board in the second, scoring all unanswered to build an 8-0 advantage. Reynolds scored his second to put UCLA up 5-0 (6:12). Senior Chris Fahlsing scored a power play goal (3:44) to extend the lead to 6-0. Freshman Alex Roelse scored on a counter to put the Bruins up 7-0 (0:49). Then Fahlsing scored his second just before the buzzer (0:00) to give UCLA an 8-0 lead at the break.

The Bruins won a defensive battle in the third period, 2-1. Reynolds completed his hat trick with a penalty score to extend the lead to 9-0 (6:36). Then Matt Cuozzo ended the scoring drought for LMU, picking up a rebound to score between three Bruin defenders (3:55). Senior David Culpan pushed the lead to 10-1 with a counter attack strike with 2:45 to go, ending the scoring in the third with the Bruins leading 10-1.

UCLA also won a defensive-minded fourth quarter, 2-1. Roelse scored his second of the game to put UCLA up 11-1 (5:51 - 4th). LMU's Emanuel Di Stasio scored an exclusion goal with 3:10 to go to cut it to 11-2. Fahlsing then completed a hat trick with a power play goal to push the lead to 12-2 (2:35), providing the final.

The Bruins were 3-for-10 on power plays while LMU was 0-for-7. UCLA also converted on its only penalty shot.

Sophomore Garrett Danner started in goal for UCLA and played the first two quarters and was relieved by senior Stephen White in the third period, who was relieved by senior James Hartshorne in the fourth. Danner ended with seven saves while pitching a shutout. White surrendered one goal while registering five saves. Hartshorne also allowed one goal while making two stops. Dominick Beaudine played the first half in goal for the Lions and allowed eight goals while making six stops. Kirk Wilenius played the second half in the cage for LMU, allowing four goals while being credited with seven saves.

The Bruins host Golden West College at 3:00 p.m. today in an exhibition game and host Princeton on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Center for a tune-up before hosting the SoCal Tournament Oct. 11-12.
