
UCLA in Second Place after Opening Round at CordeValle

Knapp fired an opening round 66 (-5) and the Bruins posted a team score of 355 (E) on the first day of play at the tournament, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. USC was the leader in the clubhouse after 18 holes at two-under par 353. Texas was third at 359 (+4), followed by fourth-place Northwestern at five-over 360 and Stanford at 362 (+7).
The format for the Gifford Collegiate Championship is six-players-count-five over 54 holes.
Knapp recorded four birdies, an eagle and a bogey during his round. In one three-hole stretch, he made birdie, eagle, birdie to drop four strokes below par. He was tied with Doug Ghim of Texas, and both players were one shot ahead of USC's Paul Smith.
Tied for 14th place at even par 71 was junior Lorens Chan. Senior Preston Valder and junior Jonathan Garrick were tied for 22nd at one-over par 72, and senior Manav Shah was tied for 31st at 74 (+3). Freshman Brandon Mai recorded a 79 (+8) and was tied for 64th place.
UCLA brought its entire team to San Martin and the rest of the team played as individuals. Senior Matt Pinizzotto and freshman Victor Ponte were tied for 14th place at even par 71. Senior Jay Hwang posted a 72 (+1) and was tied for 22nd place. Freshman Corey Shaun was tied for 45th following his round of 75 (+4), and senior Kyle Pollema was tied for 54th place after posting a 77 (+6). For complete results and tee times click here.
