Third-Ranked Men's Tennis Blanks Stanford, 4-0
April 05, 2014 | Men's Tennis
Unlike its match against the Bears where UCLA lost the doubles point, the Bruins were able gain that 1-0 advantage on Saturday, taking a pair of 8-4 wins at court Nos. 2 and 3. After Joseph Di Giulio and Clay Thompson took care of business at the No. 2 spot, freshmen Gage Brymer and Mackenzie McDonald clinched the point for the Bruins over Nolan Paige and Anthony Tsodikov at court No. 3.
Following doubles, straight-set wins by Brymer (court No. 4) and Karue Sell (court No. 5) in singles quickly put UCLA ahead 3-0 in the match. Thompson, the top-ranked player in America, then clinched the win for the Bruins at court No. 2, where he dispatched of Daniel Ho, 6-1, 6-3.
Marcos Giron (court No. 1), McDonald (court No. 3) and Di Giulio (court No. 6) were all leading in their respective matches when play was suspended.
There was a special Senior Day ceremony between singles and doubles, as UCLA honored its seniors Adrien Puget, Brendan Wee and Thompson. Team manager David Vu was also recognized.
UCLA continues Pac-12 play next week, hitting the road for matches at Utah (Friday) and Arizona (Sunday).
