No. 1 Men's Soccer Picks Up 3-1 Road Win Over No. 11 Wake Forest

August 30, 2014 | Men's Soccer

Winston-Salem, N.C. - The top-ranked UCLA men's soccer opened up its 2014 campain on a solid note on Friday evening, downing No. 11 Wake Forest, 3-1 before 3,738 at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. Despite getting behind early in the match, the Bruins (1-0) were able to battle back, eventually scoring three unanswered goals against the ACC powerhouse.

"A 3-1 victory on the road against a strong Wake Forest team is a good way to start the season," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We displayed a resiliency combined with well taken creative goals. We look forward to playing a very good UNC team and building on our performance tonight."

Although Ian Harkes put the Demon Deacons ahead 1-0 in just the 13th minute of the match, Wake Forest's lead didn't last long, with Bruin senior Andrew Tusaazemajja getting the equalizer a little more than two mintues later (15:11) on an unassisted strike from the left side of the box.

Six more minutes was all the Bruins would need to then take the lead, as junior Larry Ndjock put UCLA ahead 2-1 when he received a ball into the box at the 21:56 mark. Tusaazemajja and Felix Vobejda contibuted assists on that goal.

The two teams then played 65 minutes of scoreless soccer until freshman Seyi Adekoya scored the first goal of his young career on a shot from just inside the box in the 88th minute. That would complete the scoring, as UCLA was able to hold off the Demon Deacons (0-1) for the remainder of the game to preserve the 3-1 victory.

Bruin keeper Earl Edwards played the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Bruins, making three saves.

UCLA returns to action on Sunday, heading to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for a 4:00 p.m. (PST) battle against another ACC power.
