
No. 3 UCLA Trounces No. 14 Loyola Marymount, 22-2

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 3 UCLA men's water polo team scored 20 goals for the third consecutive game, only the third time in school history (1990, 2012) to accomplish that feat, while posting a 22-2 victory over No. 14 Loyola Marymount on Sunday afternoon at the Triton Invitational on the campus of UC San Diego. Senior Cristiano Mirarchi led the Bruins with six goals, and has scored 13 in his last two games.
The Bruins dominated right from the start, jumping out to a 9-0 lead after the first period. Mirarchi (6:58, 6:23 and 5:55) and junior Danny McClintick (4:04, 1:03 and 0:00) each completed hat tricks in the opening stanza. UCLA also received first quarter goals from senior Paul Reynolds (7:29), redshirt freshman Jack Grover (power play goal, 4:53) and freshman Alex Roelse (power play goal, 0:40).
UCLA pitched another shutout in the second period while picking up three more scores to lead 12-0 at halftime. Senior Christopher Meinhold struck first at 6:18 mark then Mirarchi knotched his fourth and fifth goals (power play, 4:36 and goal at full strength, 1:32) to end the second period scoring.
The Bruins scored the first three goals of the third period to extend their lead to 15-0. Senior Chris Fahlsing opened the second-half scoring with 7:30 left and then Mirarchi scored his sixth and final goal with a power play strike at the 6:05 mark. Sophomore Jack Fellner then netted his first score (4:41) before LMU's Kyle Etrata snapped UCLA's scoring streak (4:10) to make it 15-1. But the Bruins responded with three straight goals (redshirt freshman Maxwell Irving, 2:18; sophomore Patrick Woepse, 0:42 and Fellner, 0:03) to end the third period with an 18-1 advantage.
Redshirt freshman Matt Farmer opened the fourth quarter with a power play goal (6:29) and Irving followed with an exclusion goal (4:25) to push the lead to 20-1. Sophomore Alec Zwaneveld then scored back-to-back goals (power play goal at 2:36 and goal at set at 1:52) to extend the lead to 22-1. The Lions' Tyler Testman ended the scoring with 0:27 remaining to provide the 22-2 final.
The Bruins were 8-for-10 on power plays while the Lions were 0-for-7 while neither team attempted a penalty shot.
Sophomore Garrett Danner made the start in the cage for UCLA and played two and a half quarters, picking up six saves while allowing one goal. Senior Stephen White finished out the game for the Bruins and was credited with two saves while allowing one goal. Dominick Beaudine played the entire game in goal for LMU and picked up seven saves while allowing all 22 goals.
The Bruins return to action this afternoon against the hosts, No. 10 UC San Diego at 4:25 p.m. at Triton Pool.
