Men's Tennis Falls to No. 7 Georgia, 4-2 at SEC/Pac-12 Showdown

February 01, 2015 | Men's Tennis

Athens, Ga. - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to seventh-ranked Georgia, 4-2 at the SEC/Pac-12 Showdown at the University of Georgia's Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 3-0.

Georgia jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the Bruins following doubles, clinching the point when Eric Diaz and Austin Smith downed UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell, 7-5 at court No. 2. UCLA's lone win in doubles came at court No. 1, as 11th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki were 6-3 winners over 16th-ranked Paul Oosterbaan and Ben Wagland.

Although Georgia's Wayne Montomery put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with a straight-set win over Dennis Mkrtchian at court No. 2, UCLA responded with a pair of victories of its own. Straight-set wins by McDonald (court No. 1) and Redlicki (court No. 4) quickly evened the match at 2-2.

The Bulldogs then went ahead 3-2 when Smith edged UCLA sophomore Gage Brymer, 6-1, 7-6(5) at court No. 3. Although Georgia was in a point of clinching the win, UCLA still had solid chances to win at court Nos. 5 and 6, where Sell and Di Giulio both won first sets. However, Sell's opponent at court No. 5, Nick Wood, rebounded strong after dropping the first set, losing just three games in the final two sets to take a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory and clinch the 4-2 win for Georgia. When play was suspended, Di Giulio was up 7-5, 1-2 over Oosterbaan at court No. 6.

UCLA still has a chance to get a win in Georgia, as the Bruins will take on No. 17 Florida on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (EST). The Gators fell 5-2 to No. 1 USC in Saturday's earlier match in Georgia.
