UCLA Track & Field Sweeps New Mexico Team Invite

ALBUQUERQUE – The UCLA track and field team claimed both the men and women's team titles at the New Mexico Team Invite, Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

The women tallied 93 points to outdistance host New Mexico (91.5) while the men recorded 74 points to down Pac-12 foe Arizona State (72). The Bruins combined for five individual wins on Saturday.

UCLA showed its strength across the board as some early season performances stood out.

All-American Ida Storm continued her stranglehold atop the nation in the weight throw as she once again eclipsed 70 feet, this time winning the event with a mark of 70-4.

Torie Owers improved on her nationally ranked mark in the shot put as she earned her second straight win with a throw of 55-2.75. In the men's shot put, Nicholas Scarvelis won with a throw of 60-8.

In the pole vault All-American Mike Woepse cleared 18-1.25 to win the event for the second straight week. Mark Sakioka followed in fifth with a clearance of 16-3.50. In the women's competition, Elena Clarke cleared a lifetime best 13-6.50 to place second. Kayla Mallett finished third with a jump of 13-2.50.

Also claiming a win was Nick Hartle in the 800m. In the altitude, Hartle crossed the line in a time of 1:50.02.

In the women's high jump, Zibby Boyer recorded a lifetime best of 6-0 to finish second overall. Her jump of 6-0 is tied for the eighth best performance in UCLA history. Alexis Walker followed in fourth with a jump of 5-8.50.

Kelsey Smith was runner-up in the 3,000m with a time of 9:35.15 while Bronte Golick followed in fourth with a time of 9:48.47.

In the men's mile, Lane Werley was second with a time of 4:05.84. UCLA had four finishers in the top-11 in the event.

Steele Wasik finished third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.10 while Kylie Price placed third in the 60m with a time of 7.43. Kimani Austin-Reese rounded out the top-three performers by crossing the line in 1:34.76 in the 600m.

A smaller group of Bruins will head back to Albuquerque next weekend for the New Mexico Classic. UCLA will send its pentathlon and heptathlon athletes for a two-day meet that will begin on Friday, Feb. 6.
