Bruins Tied for 12th after Opening Round in Hawai'i

The fourth-ranked UCLA men's golf team was tied for 12th place after the first round of the 24th annual Amer Ari Invitational at the Waikoloa King's Course in Kona, HI.

The Bruins posted a team score of 283 (-5), seven shots behind frontrunner USC, which led the field at 276 (-12). Arizona State and Washington were tied for second at 277 (-11), followed by Stanford in fourth place at 278 (-10). Tied for fifth were Auburn, Oregon State and Texas Tech at eight-under par 280. The Bruins were tied with Texas.

Senior Manav Shah led the Bruins with a score of 67 (-5) on the strength of seven birdies, including five on the back nine. Two bogeys brought him back to five-under par. Senior Jay Hwang and juniors Jonathan Garrick and Lorens Chan were all tied for 49th at even par 72. Freshman Brandon Mai posted a 77 (+5) and was tied for 95th.

Washington's Cheng-Tsung Pan led the field with a 65 (-7).

In other news, junior Jake Knapp, playing as an amateur in the Farmer's Insurance Open at Torrey Pines this week, was tied for 94th after posting a 73 (+1) on the North Course.
