Men's Tennis Opens Up Pac-12 Tournament With a Win
April 24, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Similar to the its 6-1 win over Washington on March 28 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, UCLA opened up Thursday's match by claiming the one point awarded for doubles play. An 8-1 win by 84th-ranked Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell at court No. 2 was soon followed up by another Bruin victory, this time by Dennis Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp at court No. 3. The Bruin duo clinched the point for UCLA when they downed Jake Douglas and Wendell Watanabe, 8-5.
Following doubles, UCLA then got straight-set wins from its top three players, as Mackenzie McDonald, Mkrtchian and Martin Redlicki all cruised at the top of the lineup. After Mkrtchian (court No. 2) and McDonald (court No. 1) took of business at their respective courts, the clinching point for UCLA came at the No. 3 spot, as Redlicki was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Emmett Egger.
Friday marks the first time since the Pac-12 Tournament's inception in 2012 that UCLA and USC will meet in the semifinals. The two teams have met in the final every year, with USC winning the inaugural Pac-12 Tournament in 2012 and UCLA taking the crown in 2013 and 2014. The two teams have already met twice this season with USC winning both contests.
