Bruins Tied for Eighth after Round One at NCAA Championships

The 17-ranked UCLA golf team was tied for eighth place after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Concession GC in Bradenton, FL.

The Bruins were tied with Texas and South Florida at 6-over par 294. Top-ranked Illinois was in first-place at 286 (-2), followed by Georgia at 288 (E). In the third place at 1-over par 289 was USC, followed by fourth place San Diego State at 290 (+2) and fifth-place LSU at (292 (+4). In a tie for sixth place are Florida and Georgia Tech at 293 (+5).

Individually for the Bruins, junior Jake Knapp led the Bruins with a score of 71 (-1), tied for 13th place. Tied for 54th place were junior Jonathan Garrick and senior Preston Valder after posting scores of 2-over par 74. Junior Lorens Chan was tied for 72nd place after carding a 75 (+3), and senior Manav Shah had the drop score of 79 (+7), tied for 125th.

Thomas Detry of Illinois and Claudio Corea of South Florida were tied for the lead at 4-under par 68.

Following Sunday's third round the field will be cut to 15 teams, and after Monday's round it will be cut again to eight to determine the bracket for match play on June 1 and 2.
