Bruins Continue Winning Ways at No. 7 UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins led wire-to-wire, imrpovingย to 20-0 on the year with a 10-7ย victory at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (8-5) in a non-conferenceย game at Campus Pool on Wednesday afternoon.ย The win marked the Bruins' 53rd in a row.

Juniorย Alex Roelse led the Bruins with a game-high-tying three goals. Juniorย Max Irving and senior Chancellor Ramirezย each scored twice for UCLA. Senior Garrett Danner started in goal for the Bruins, registering eightย saves,ย four steals and one assist while giving up seven goals (five on power plays). Liam Lenihanย started in goal for the Gauchos, registering six saves while allowing all 10 goals (five on power plays).

Junior Max Irving gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead (7:25) after an exclusion was drawn on the opening possession. Senior Chancellor Ramirezย gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead with another power play goal at the 2:11 mark of the first period. But the Gauchos' Boris Jovanovic cut the lead to 2-1 (1:49) with a goal at even strength. Junior Alex Roelse ended the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 3-1 after another power play score (1:19).

UCSB's Shane Hauschildย trimmed the lead to 3-2 (6:50) with a power play goal, but senior Ryder Roberts answered immediately (6:19) scoring a goal with the shot clock expiringย to push the lead to 4-2. But the Gauchos respond with another 6-on-5 score, this time by Jovanovic,ย to cut the to 4-3 (5:17). Sophomore David Stiling then scored an exclusion goal (4:41) to push the lead to 5-3. But UCSB's Samer Alkatebย made it 5-4 with a power play goal at the 3:55 mark of the second period, which ended the scoring in the quarter.

Ramirez set up Irving for his second score of the game with a front court strike (6:03) and junior Jack Grover set up Ramirez at two metersย for his second score of the game (4:44) to push the lead to 7-4.ย Reed Cotterill cut the lead to 7-5 with the Gauchos' fourth power play goal of the game (3:15). But the Bruins received their fourth power play score of the contest from senior Joey Fuentes (2:52) to push the lead back to three goals at 8-5. Jovanovic completed his hat trick with another power play score (0:05) to end the third with the Bruins leading 8-6.

Roelse opened the scoring in the fourth, scoring a power play goal at theย 7:07ย mark to make it 9-6. Cotterillย trimmed the lead to 9-7 with a goal from the front court (3:43). Roelse then completed his hat trick with a counter score with a lob shot off a feed from Danner (2:12) to provide theย 10-7 final.ย 

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 at No. 2 California for their television debut on the Pac-12 Network for an MPSFย game at 3:30 p.m.
