BERKELEY, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins never trailed at No. 2 California, improvingย to 21-0 on the year and 1-0 in the MPSF with a 7-6 victory on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.ย The win marked the Bruins' 54th in a row and the 25th straight in league play.

Juniorย Alex Roelse led the Bruins with a game-highย three goals while senior Patrick Fellner added two scores. Senior Garrett Danner started in goal for the Bruins, registering 11 saves and four stealsย while giving up six goals (two on power plays, two on counters). Lazar Andric started in goal for the Golden Bears, allowing seven goals. Goalie statistics were not provided for Cal.

Junior Max Irving gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead (6:55) with a goal from the front court. California's Conner Reid ended the scoring in the first quarter with a front court strikeย at the 0:09ย mark to tie it at 1-1.

Junior Alex Roelse opened the scoring in the second period with a penalty conversion (5:15) to make it 2-1. But Cal's Conor Neumann tied it at 2-2 (4:46) with a power play goal.ย Fellner gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead (3:55) with a strike from the front court. Roelse scored his second of the game on a power playย (1:10) to push the lead to 4-2. But Odysseas Masmanidisย scored on a counter (0:11) for Calย to cut the Bruins lead to 4-3 at the break.

Each team only scored once in a defensive-minded third period. The Bruins got a goal from the front court by Roelse (7:36) to complete his hat trickย to make it 5-3, but Luca Cupido scored a front court goal for Cal (2:10) to make it 5-4 heading into the fourth.

California's Safak Simsek opened the scoring in the fourth with a power play goal with 7:19 to go, tying the game at 5-5. Junior Jack Groverย scored from the front court (6:53) to put the Bruins up 6-5. Masmanidis scored on another counter (3:42) to tie things up at 6-6. Senior Patrick Fellner provided the game-winning goal with 2:07 to go to provide the 7-6 final.ย 

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they host No. 5 Stanford in another MPSF game on the Pac-12 Networks. Opening sprint will be at 11:30 a.m.
