Patrick Fellner's Hat Trick Leads UCLA to Victory

The senior scored the game-winning goal with 1:47 left to beat No. 6 Stanford, 7-6.

LOS ANGELES, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins never trailed against No. 6 Stanford and got some late game-winning heroics from senior Patrick Fellner to post a 7-6 win on Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center on the Pac-12 Networks. With the win, the Bruins improved to 22-0 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF. The win was UCLA's 55th in a row and 26th straight in league play.
Senior Patrick Fellner led the Bruins with a hat trick and his final goal with 1:47 to go proved to be the game-winner. Junior Jack Grover added two scores for the Bruins. Senior Garrett Danner started in goal for the Bruins, registering eightย saves, twoย steals and two assistsย while giving up six goals (fourย on power plays). Oliver Lewisย started in goal for the Cardinal, allowing seven goals while making seven stopsย for Stanford.
Grover opened the scoring with a skip shot nearside (5:54) to put UCLA up 1-0. Then senior Ryder Roberts made it 2-0 with a left-handed shot that found the back of the net on the right side of the cage (5:12). Stanford's Spencer Rogers cut the lead to 2-1 (3:58) with a power play strike. Then Cody Smith tied it at 2-2 with another power play goal at the 1:57 mark. Grover's second score, an exclusion goal, put the Bruins back in front (1:32), 3-2. Thenย Fellner fired a shot at the buzzer past Stanford's goalieย from mid-pool to end the first period scoring with UCLA leading 4-2.
Stanford's Harris Enright opened the scoring in the second period with a counter attack goal at the 4:30 mark to cut the lead to 4-3. Mitchell Mendoza then tied the game at 4-4 with a power play goal (3:37). Fellner scored on a cross-cage power play shot (0:31) to give the Bruins a 5-4 lead. But Stanford's Sam Pfeil tied it at 5-5 with an exclusion goal (0:03) to end the scoring at 5-5 at the break.
Neither team scored in a defensive-minded third period with both teams failing to convert one power play opportunity in the quarter.
Senior Chancellor Ramirez ended a 12:30 scoring drought for both teams with a counter attack score with 3:32 left in the fourth period to put the Bruins up 6-5. But Marco Stanchi scored his second of the game on the next possession on a redirect to tie it at 6-6ย with 3:13 to go. Fellner completed his hat trick after a timeout with a game-winning nearside shotย to put the Bruins up 7-6 (1:47). UCLA made several defensive stops to secure the win.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Nov. 5ย when they host San Jose State (3:30 p.m.) and Whittier (5:00 p.m.) on "Senior Day."
