NAPA, Calif. - The Bruins finished third after 36 holes of stroke play on Monday at the Gifford Collegiate and will face #6-seed Washington in Tuesday's match play quarterfinals at the Silverado Resort and Spa.
UCLA followed an even-par 360 in round one with a 14-under 346 in round two to post a 36-hole total of 706 (-14). The Bruins-Huskies matchup will begin at 7:57 a.m. off the 10th tee in the following order:
7:57 a.m. - Spencer Soosman (UCLA) vs. Henry Lee (UW)
8:07 a.m. - Hidetoshi Yoshihara (UCLA) vs. Carl Yuan (UW)
8:16 a.m. - Matt Hutchins (UCLA) vs. Daniel List (UW)
8:26 a.m. - Cole Madey (UCLA) vs. Corey Pereira (UW)
8:35 a.m. - Patrick Murphy (UCLA) vs. Sam Warkentin (UW)
8:45 a.m. - Tyler Collier (UCLA) vs. Frank Garber (UW)
Tuesday's other matchups will be #1-seed USC vs. #8-seed Wisconsin, #2-seed Stanford vs. #7-seed South Florida and #4-seed Colorado and #5-seed Northwestern. Live scoring will be available here. Tuesday's match play quarterfinals will be followed by semifinals later in the afternoon.
Yoshihara was the low scorer for the Bruins on Tuesday, following an even-par 72 in the morning with a 6-under 66 in the afternoon to tie for sixth (-6, 138). He was steady in round one with a birdie on the eighth, a bogey on the fourth and 16 pars. Yoshihara got the birdie train going in round two, while also making an eagle on the fifth. He gained single strokes on #1, #9, #14, #17 and #18, with his lone miscue being a bogey on the 16th.
Soosman finished 14th, going 70-71 (-3, 141). He had four birdies in his first round on #8, #14, #17 and #18 to go with bogeys at #11 and #15 to record a 2-under score. In round two (-1), Soosman also had four birdies on the first, eighth, 15th and 17th to go with a bogey on the third and a double on the fifth. Collier tied for 15th, shooting 72 and 70 (-2, 142). He balanced his books in round one with two birdies on #13 and #18 to go with bogeys on #5 and #8. In round two, Collier made an eagle with a hole out on the par-4 13th, adding birdies on #4, #7 and #18 to go with three bogeys for a 2-under round.
Madey tied for 18th with a 1-over 73 in the morning and a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. His two birdies in round one came on the fifth and seventh to go with three bogeys. Madey was bogey-free in round two, making birdie on the fifth again, as well as #8, to go with 16 pars. Murphy and Hutchins each tied for 33rd at 4-over 148. Murphy shot a 1-over 73 in the morning with birdies on #4, #10 and #12 and four bogeys. In round two, his lone birdie came on the fifth to go with four bogeys for a 3-over 75. Hutchins was 10 shots better from the morning to the afternoon. After a 7-over 79, which saw him have two birdies (#10, #18), four bogeys, a double and a triple bogey, he rebounded with a 3-under 69 in round two. Hutchins birdied #4, #5, #9, #16 and #18, with bogeys on the sixth and seventh.
Three Bruins played as individuals. Freshman Scott Mitchell tied for 38th with a 5-over 149. He had a 3-over 75 in round one with a birdie on the eighth and four bogeys. In round two, Mitchell birdied the fifth and 18th to go with four bogeys for a 2-over 74. Sophomore Phil Delisi tied for 45th with a 9-over 153. He was 5-over (77) in round one with a birdie on the second, four bogeys and a double. In the afternoon, Delisi made birdies on #2, #16 and #17, adding four bogeys and a triple for a 4-over 76. Freshman Harrison Mahon was 51st (+14, 158). In round one, he shot a 3-over 75 with two birdies (#3, #18), three bogeys and a double. Mahon had six bogeys and a quintuple in his 11-over 83 in the afternoon.
