
No. 9 UCLA Falls to No. 1 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 UCLA men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season when it fell to top-ranked Virginia, 6-1, on Tuesday evening.
The Bruins dropped their first doubles point of the season to the Cavaliers. On court 2, Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell lost to the fifth-ranked pair in the country in Mac Styslinger and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, 6-2. Virginia's 14th-ranked duo of Ryan Shane and Luca Corinteli clinched the point for the Cavs when they dispatched Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki, 6-3, on court 1. Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp recorded the Bruins' only doubles win of the evening, downing J.C. Aragone and Collin Altamirano, 7-6.
In singles play, Virginia quickly expanded the lead with wins on courts 6 and 2 as No. 90 Henrik Wiersholm and second-ranked Kwiatkowski defeated Di Giulio and Brymer, respectively, in straight sets. The deciding point was won on court 5 when 98th-ranked Logan Staggs fell to No. 74 Aragone in straights. Sell registered the Bruins' only point of the day on court 4, edging Styslinger in a tight three setter.
Next up, UCLA will compete in this week's ITA National Team Indoor Championship, to be held Feb. 12-15 at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The ITA Indoors features the top-16 teams in the nation playing for the first team championship of the year.
