Bruins Upset TAMU, Face UNC in Semis

February 13, 2016 | Men's Tennis

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The ninth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team advances to the semifinals of the 2016 ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship.  The Bruins ousted third-ranked Texas A&M 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

“It was a rollercoaster ride,” said UCLA head coach Billy Martin of the match. “Doubles couldn't have been closer with all three going to tiebreakers.  In singles, we won three first sets.  It looked good for a while, but then we dropped those second sets except for Karue [Sell].  There was a lot of back and forth.”

Both teams battled to put the first point on the board as each doubles match went to the tiebreaker.  The 12th-ranked pair of Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki struck first on court 1 with a 7-6(4) win over TAMU's Arthur Rinderknech and Jackson Withrow.  Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp quickly followed suit on court 2 to clinch the doubles point and give the Bruins a 1-0 advantage.

The Aggies retaliated with a point of their own, winning the first match in singles play.  Withrow downed Logan Staggs in straights on court 5 to even the score at 1-1.  Max Lunkin added another point for TAMU when he defeated Joseph Di Giulio on court 6.  This would be the last point of the day for the Aggies, however, as the Bruins rallied to take three straight matches to clinch the win.

On court 3, No. 37 Redlicki took a three setter over Jordi Arconada to even the score at 2-2.  Karue Sell regained the lead for the Bruins with a straight-set win over AJ Catanzariti on court 4.  The deciding point came down to No. 80 Brymer and No. 34 McDonald.  Both matches went three sets as Brymer split with No. 39 Shane Vinsant on court 2 and McDonald forced a third set on court 1.  Brymer took his match with a service winner to give UCLA an insurmountable 4-2 lead.

With the win, the Bruins advance to the semis where they will face the seventh-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.  The match takes place at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT at the Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.

“Carolina is playing very well,” said Martin of tomorrow's semifinal matchup.  “It will be an extremely tough match for us.  We're going to go out there and give a good try.”
