RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Bruins won twice on Monday to advance to the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms semifinals, defeating Delaware (4-0-1) and 17th-ranked San Diego State (4-1). UCLA will face Arizona in Tuesday's semifinals.
Freshman Bethany Wu was the first Bruin to put a point on the board against Delaware, defeating Vitoria Teixeira, 4 and 3. Starting on the 10th hole, Wu dropped the 11th before winning the 12th to get back to all-square. Wu took #16, but Teixeira got back to even at the first. However, starting on the third, Wu won four straight holes to close out Teixeira.
Senior Louise Ridderström, junior Bronte Law and freshman Lilia Vu also wrapped up their victories before reaching the 18th hole. Ridderström and Nathalie Filler went back and forth on the last six holes of their opening nine. Filler won holes #13 and #15, but Ridderström claimed the 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th to go 2-up at the turn. After a rare halve on the first, the next six holes were won by either player. Filler took the third and sixth, but Ridderström won the second, fourth, fifth and seventh to win the match, 4 and 2. Law dropped the 12th hole against Vimonth Benjasupawan, but won the 13th. The Bruin junior again was down by one after a loss on #15, but claimed holes #16, #18 and #1 to take a 2-up edge. After four halves, Law won the sixth and the seventh to take the match, 4 and 2.
Vu staged a great comeback versus Andrea Slane. She lost her first three holes before a win on #16, but a loss on #17 saw Vu make the turn at 3-down. The comeback began on the first with a win, followed by victories on the fourth and fifth to get to all-square. Vu then made birdies on the sixth and eighth to clinch the match by a score of 2 and 1. The final match to finish was an all-square contest between junior Hadas Libman and Ashley Dingman. Libman won the first two holes before Dingman came back to take #13 and #15. A Libman win on #16 and a Dingman victory on #17 kept it all-square to the second nine. Libman posted victories on holes #1, #3 and #5, but Dingman wins on #2 and #6 gave the Bruin junior a 1-up lead heading to the ninth. Dingman would birdie the par 5 though and the match ended all-square.
Versus the host Aztecs, San Diego State would end up scoring the first point of the match when Georgia Lacey defeated Libman, 4 and 3. Lacey led the whole way, winning holes #1, #3, #5, #9, #11 and #15, with Libman claiming victories on the sixth and eighth. Law evened things up with a 5 and 4 triumph over Sirene Blair, winning wire-to-wire and dropping only one hole. She made seven birdies in her first 13 holes, winning the second, third, sixth, seventh, eighth and 11th before dropping the 12th hole.
Ridderström also never trailed against Emma Henrikson and only lost one hole in clinching the Bruins' second point. While she only made one birdie, the senior won the second, third, fifth and 11th holes, dropping the 13th and winning the match, 3 and 2. Wu defeated Milagros Chaves, 1-up, to clinch the overall match for UCLA. She also never trailed, winning holes #2, #3 and #4 before dropping the fifth. Wu then won the 11th and 12th holes, but lost #13, #15 and #16. She would hold on to par the 18th and win the match.
Vu had another great comeback in the afternoon, defeating Haleigh Krause, 1-up. Krause won the third, seventh and ninth holes before Vu began her comeback. The Bruin freshman claimed the 10th, 12th and 13th to square the match. A victory on the 16th gave Vu a 1-up lead, which would end up being the final tally as the two players had to finish their match Tuesday morning due to darkness.
