Bruins Go 4-0 at Wolverine Invite

March 07, 2016 | Women's Water Polo

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team returns home after a successful outing at the Wolverine Invitational this weekend.  The Bruins downed Loyola Marymount and George Washington on Saturday followed by Michigan and Bucknell on Sunday to improve to 15-2 on the season.

In Sunday morning's match, UCLA squared off with No. 5 Michigan in the teams' third meeting of the season.  Once again, the Bruins prevailed in a defensive showdown.  UCLA registered nine goals on 25 shots while holding Michigan to five on 21 shots.  Together, the two squads compiled 14 exclusions.  On the power play, the Bruins were zero for five and the Wolverines were one for seven.

UCLA held Michigan scoreless in the first and fourth quarters.  In the cage, senior Alex Musselman and freshman Carlee Kapana split time.  Musselman tallied four saves and Kapana had three.  Offensively, Devin Grab and India Forster led the charge for the Bruins, each netting three goals.  Mackenzie Barr, Kelsey O'Brien, and Rachel Whitelegge recorded a goal apiece.

In the Bruins' final outing of the weekend, they routed Bucknell with an explosive offensive effort.  UCLA notched 20 goals on 29 shots for a 0.69 shot percentage.  A trio of Bruins—Ashley Zwirner, Sarah Sheldon, and Nicole Reynolds—registered hat tricks.  Lizette Rozeboom, Grab, Forster, Barr, and Alexa Tielmann netted a pair apiece.  Freshman Kelsey Blacker found the back of the net in the fourth quarter off of an assist from Whitelegge.

Defensively, the Bruins forced 11 turnovers and tallied nine steals.  Kapana and Musselman split time between the pipes.  The rookie put up four stops and the veteran recorded seven.

Next up, UCLA heads to CSU Bakersfield to take on the Roadrunners in a Sunday matinee matchup.  The game takes place at the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center at 1 p.m. PT on Mar. 20.
