Personal Bests Fall Against Texas A&M

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team posted several lifetime bests and impressive national leading marks Saturday in the dual meet against Texas A&M.

The meet got off to an exhilarating start as freshman Stamatia Scarvelis seized the lead on her sixth and final throw in the hammer. The newcomer launched a personal best mark of 196-11 to win the event and improve the seventh best throw in UCLA history.

In the men's hammer freshman Dotun Ogundeji finished second with a personal best throw of 153-5. Kai Wong followed in third at 121-1.

The UCLA throwing prowess continued in the women's shot put as junior Torie Owers uncorked the third farthest throw in the country at 57-5. Her huge personal best moved her to seventh all-time in the UCLA record books. Scarvelis followed in second in the event with a throw of 52-7.25 while freshman Ashlie Blake was third at 49-8.50.

The men had their turn in the ring and older brother Nicholas Scarvelis opened his outdoor season on point. The senior launched a national leading and personal best throw of 67-0 to run away with the shot put win. Sophomore Braheme Days finished second at 63-2 while Ogundeji followed in third at 60-6.50. Scarvelis also won the discus with a throw of 187-1.

Freshman Greta Wagner once again won the pole vault with a clearance of 13-6.50. Sophomore Elleyse Garrett followed in third at with a personal best 13-2.50.

The Bruins went 1-2 in the men's high jump as freshman Michael Burke won for the second straight week, this time clearing 6-11.50. Sophomore Sage Stone followed at 6-9.50.

UCLA also finished 1-2 in the women's long jump as Kylie Price leaped a winning mark of 20-9.75. Sophomore Jessie Maduka followed in second at 20-0.25.

The women's 4x100m relay got the track portion of the meet off to a blazing start as the Bruin quartet clocked a 43.91. Despite some rough handoffs senior anchor leg Kylie Price ran down Texas A&M to post the first sub-44 second relay since 2004.

A pair of sophomores earned wins for the Bruins as Misana Viltz clocked a 14.10 to claim the 110m hurdles while Leon Powell ran away from the competition with a 10.44 in the 100m.

Senior Nick Hartle used a great field in the 800m to run a huge personal best and post the third fastest time in UCLA history at 1:46.73. His time was nearly a second PR as his old time that ranked sixth in the record books was 1:47.51.

There were also some solid personal bests for the Bruins. Freshman Angie Annelus was second in the 200m with a lifetime best of 23.24. Also in the 400m junior Jonny Moniz posted a strong personal best to finish third at 47.07. In the 200m Powell came back and broke 21 seconds for the first time, placing second with a time of 20.94.

After three consecutive weeks at home the Bruins will head to San Diego next weekend for the Triton Invitational. This two day meet will take place on Friday, April 22 and Saturday, April 23. The hammer, pole vault, and discus will begin on Friday and will continue into Saturday along with track events and the remaining field events.
