April 02, 2016 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Shaking off a slow start, the fifth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team rattled off four straight singles wins to defeat No. 36 Stanford on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Bruins improve to 15-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Stanford came out like gangbusters in doubles, jumping out to early leads on all three courts. The Cardinal clinched the point on courts 2 and 3 as Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell were edged by Nolan Paige and David Wilczynski, 6-4, and Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy fell to Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar, 6-3. On court 1, the fourth-ranked pair of Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki trailed Stanford's Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz, 4-5, when the set was abandoned.
UCLA picked up steam in singles, taking four of six first sets. Logan Staggs then cruised past Paige in straights on court 5 to even the score at 1-1. Shortly after, No. 98 Sell downed No. 101 Kumar in straight sets on court 4 to give the Bruins their first lead of the match.
After edging No. 56 Wilczynski, 7-5, in the first set on court 2, No. 49 Redlicki trailed, 1-4, to start the second. Redlicki battled back to knot the score at 5-5, and then traded the next two games with Wilczynski to send it into the tiebreaker. Redlicki won the tiebreaker, 7-4, to take the match and inch the Bruins closer to victory.
