PRINCETON, N.J.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 6-0 on the year with aย 17-2 victory over 14th-rankedย Brown in the firstย game of the Princeton Invitationalย on Saturday morning at Denunzio Pool. The victory marked UCLA's 39th-straight win,ย which extends the second-longest winning streak in school history. The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68.
Fresh off his stint with Team USA at the Olympic Games, junior Alex Roelse made his season debut with UCLA and responded with a game-high four goals, one in every quarter. Senior Joey Fuentes also had a hat trick for the Bruins.ย Junior Aleksandar Ruzic played the entire gameย in the cage for the Bruins, registering seven saves and two assists while allowing two goals in the fourth period.
Roelse scored the first goal of the game on a counter attack (5:08). Senior Alec Zwaneveld scored on a power play to put UCLA up 2-0 (2:37) and senior Patrick Fellner converted a penalty shot (2:02) to end the scoring in the first with the Bruins leading 3-0.
The Bruins pitched another shutout in the second period while scoring three more goals.ย Roelse opened the scoring again with a strike from the frontcourt (2:29). Senior Ryder Roberts scored an exclusion goal to make it 5-0 at the 1:34 mark. Fuentes then scored his first on a counter (0:23) to give the Bruins a 6-0 advantage at the break.
Another shutout followed in the third with UCLA pouring in six goals in the period. Roelse again opened the scoring (7:42), converting a penalty shot. Sophomore Warren Snyder scored on a counter (7:18) and junior Matt Farmer scored from set (6:43) to make it 9-0. After a score from the front court by junior Jack Grover (6:04), Zwaneveld added his second, this one from two meters (5:30), to put the Bruins up 11-0. Grover added his second score on a power play to end the scoring in the third (4:36) with the Bruins leading 12-0.
UCLA made it 14 straight goals before Brown got on the board. Junior James Robinson scored on a power play for the Bruins (7:25) and Farmer added his second from two meters (6:48) before Tyler Kirchberg converted a penalty shot (4:27) for Brown to make it 14-1. Fuentes scored his second (3:48) on a power play, Roelse added his fourth from the front court (3:03) and Fuentes completed his hat trick (1:49) to reel off three straight for UCLA. Luke Irwin scored on a counter (1:20) for Brown to provide the 17-2 final.
