SAN DIEGO, Calif. --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins began a busy day of three games and one scrimmage with aย 14-4 victory over Redlands in the first game of the UCLA Invitationalย on Sunday morning at Cathedral Catholic High School. The victory was UCLA's 36th-straight win,ย which extends the second-longest winning streak in school history. The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68.
Eight different Bruins scored in the game as UCLA sidelined all of its starters for the game.ย The Bruins were led by James Vlachonassios' threeย goals. Junior Aleksandar Ruzic was in the cage for UCLA and registered eight saves and one steal while allowing fourย goals.
The Bruins pitched a shutout in the first quarter while getting one goal each from Vlachonassios (5:41), freshman Jake Simpson (4:07) and senior Alec Zwaneveld (3:18, power play).
The Bulldogs and the Bruins battled to a 2-2 tie in the second period as UCLA got both goals from junior James Robinsonย (2:52 and 0:54). UCLA led 5-2 at the half.
Sophomore Eric Goldenberg opened the scoring in the third at the 7:12 mark. After a power play goal by Billy Clifford for Redlands (6:27), the Bruins answered with three goals to end the period up 9-3. Sophomore Austin Rone (6:12) got in on the scoring and then Vlachonassios scored two in a row at even strength (4:34 and 2:03)ย to end the scoring in the period.
The Bruins scored the first four goals in the fourth, to make it seven straight goals, and built a commanding 13-3 advantage. Sophomore Kent Inoue scored with 7:39 remaining. Then junior Jack Grover added a power play score to push the lead to 11-3 (5:25). Simpson netted his second of the game (4:47) and then senior Joey Fuentes found the back of the cage (3:45) to make it 13-3. Zac Polmanteer scored an exclusion goal for Redlands with 2:08 to go. Goldenberg scored his second of the game on a penalty shot (1:44)ย to provide the 14-4 final.
