UCLA Falls to No. 11 Stanford, 1-0
October 01, 2017 | Men's Soccer
"I thought the game in the first half was an even game up until we made a couple of critical mistakes," said head coach Jorge Salcedo. "That's kind of been the story of our season. I don't think they create much and we give them two consecutive opportunites from our goal kicks and it ends up in the back of the net. If you look at the statistics and time of possession it's probably pretty even except for the most important part of the game which is the scoreboard. We lose the game, but it;s hard for us to put our finger on anything else that we didn't do well except for giving up a bad goal at the wrong time."
Stanford (8-2-0, 2-0-0) and UCLA finished tied in shots 7-7, including 2-2 in shots on goal, while the Cardinal held a slim 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Stanford scored the match's lone goal in the 35th minute as Sam Werner served a long pass into the box that found Drew Skundrich who hit a loopy header over a leaping Kevin Silva and into the net.
The Bruins pushed offensively in the second half, and outshot the Cardinal 4-0 in the period, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Herrera looked to tie the match in the 68th minute but his header off a corner kick went wide of the goal. Six minutes later, Iloski would take a long-range strike but his shot was stopped by the keeper.
Stanford picked up its sixth shutout of the season as Nico Corti recorded two saves. Silva finished the game with one save.
UCLA will travel to the Pacific Northwest next weekend for its first Pac-12 road matches of the season. The Bruins will play at Oregon State on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. PT followed by facing Washington on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. PT. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
