LOS ANGELES -- The UCLA swimming and diving team will open its home schedule Saturday with Arkansas, UC Davis and Washington State visiting Spieker Aquatics Center for the Bruins' annual Pink Meet. Action at Dirks Pool will begin at 11:00 a.m.
Admission for Saturday's meet is $5, with all proceeds set to benefit the Iris Cantor-UCLA Women's Health Center. All fans under the age of 18 are free, as are UCLA students. If unable to attend the meet, but interested in donating to the cause, visit https://giving.ucla.edu/SwimAndDive.
In addition to being the first official home meet of the 2017-18 campaign, the Pink Meet will also represent the first for the Bruins as a full team. UCLA had two contingents representing the program each of the last two weekends. Most recently, Katie Grover, Kenisha Liu and Sandra Soe swam for the victorious Pac-12 squad in the second annual USA College Swimming Challenge, while the remaining Bruins competed at UC Santa Barbara.
Grover, Liu and Soe each tallied points for the conference's cause over the weekend. Grover finished the 100 Fly in an impressive time of 52.29 to finish fourth Saturday. Liu, meanwhile, joined with swimmers from California and Stanford to finish third (7:01.12) in the 800 Free Relay. Sunday, Soe clocked in at 9:53.85 to notch a fourth-place finish in the 1000 Free.
The previous week at the SMU Classic, Grover picked up third-place finishes in both Butterfly events.
Ciara Monahan also registered two third-place finishes in Lewisville, Texas as the lone Bruin diving representative. The Pink Meet will also represent the 2017-18 debut for the remaining Bruin divers. UCLA will also host Hawai'i Sunday for a diving-only exhibition.
While the remaining Bruin swimmers narrowly dropped their latest showdown at UCSB, it provided additional experience for UCLA's crop of freshman. Junior Emma Schanz led the way with wins in the 200 Breast (2:16.65) and 200 IM (2:02.59) and as part of the 400 Medley Relay (3:46.59), but it was newcomers Jennifer Lathrop (100 Back โ 56.13, 200 Back โ 2:00.66) and Allison Goldblatt (200 Fly โ 2:03.15) who provided the remaining individual victories.
In the early season, Arkansas and Washington State are off to 2-1 starts. The Razorback have registered victories over SMU and Missouri and a loss against South Carolina, while the Cougars defeated Cal Poly and UCSB and fell to Arizona. UC Davis has competed just once, falling to San Diego State this past Saturday.
