UCLA Suffers 1-0 Setback to No. 23 Washington
October 29, 2017 | Men's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – Christian Chavez and Brandon Terwege each tallied one shot on goal, while Kevin Silva tallied four saves as the UCLA men's soccer team fell to No. 23 Washington, 1-0, on Sunday in the final regular season home match of the season at Drake Stadium. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak in Pac-12 play as the Bruins are now 4-3-0 in conference.
"Tonight was a game that could have gone either way," said head coach Jorge Salcedo. "It felt like one goal was going to win the game and unfortunately that was the case. They found a way to hit the back of the net and we didn't. We had some chances at the end but ultimately the most important thing is the scoreboard and for us we were on the wrong end tonight."
The Bruins also celebrated Senior Day on Sunday as Brian Iloski and Chavez were recognized prior to the match.
Washington (12-5-1, 5-3-1) held a 15-10 advantage in shots, but the Bruins led 3-1 in corner kicks.
The Huskies scored the match's lone goal in the 65th minute as Jaret Townsend scored his first of the season. Handwalla Bwana and Scott Menzies pushed the ball up the field and=passed to Townsend in the middle of the penalty area and took a shot inside the right post.
UCLA almost took the lead just minutes prior as Milan Iloski took a shot from beyond the 18-yard line that just missed the frame wide to the right.
In the 85th minute the Bruins almost found the equalizer as Chavez streaked down the right side of the field and his shot to the far post got past the goalkeeper, but the UW backline was able to stop the shot for a team save and keep the clean sheet.
UCLA also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the program's first team to be associated with the NCAA as members of the 1967 team were honored at halftime.

"It's such a meaningful group to our program's history as they were the original team 50 years ago," said Salcedo about the 1967 team. "They had to be bold and brave to get the athletic department to recognize men's soccer and 50 years ago it was not as prevalent of a sport as it is now. If it wasn't for them being pioneers who knows what would have happened but we are grateful for them for coming together as a group to begin our program and build it to what it is today."
UCLA will begin a three-match road trip to finish the regular season as they head to Northern California for a pair of contests starting with Stanford on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. PT, followed by California on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT. Both matches will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Networks.
