UCLA Falls to Top-Ranked Virginia at ITA Indoors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 7 UCLA men's tennis team dropped its ITA National Team Indoor quarterfinal match Saturday to No. 1 Virginia, 4-0. The loss puts the Bruins into the consolation round, where they will play fourth-seeded and No. 4 California Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (PT).
The host Cavaliers earned two straight-set wins in doubles to secure the first point. Collin Altamirano and J.C. Aragone defeated the Bruin team of Austin Rapp and Ben Goldberg on Court 3, 6-1, in the first decision of the day. Virginia's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Alexander Ritschard quickly followed suit with a 6-3 win on Court 2 to dispatch Gage Brymer, Maxime Cressy and the Bruins from doubles play.
UCLA's Martin Redlicki captured his first set against Virginia's Collin Altamirano, but the remaining opening sets went the way of the Cavaliers. No. 64 Aragone defeated Austin Rapp in straight sets on Court 4, 6-3, 6-2, for Virginia's second point. On Court 6, Henrik Wiersholm defeated the Bruins' No. 112 Maxime Cressy, 6-4, 6-1, to put UCLA one point away from defeat. No. 28 Kwiatkowski went on to complete the sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brymer on Court 2.
The Bruins will take on their third top-10 opponent in as many days when they face the No. 4 California Golden Bears in a consolation match Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (PT). Cal fell to No. 5 North Carolina Saturday.
