UCLA Powers Back to Beat Stanford, 4-2

February 25, 2017 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 15 UCLA Bruins defeated the No. 35 Stanford Cardinal, 4-2, in a non-conference match at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Saturday. The Cardinal secured the afternoon's first two points before the Bruins responded with the next four to clinch the overall victory.

Stanford jumped out to an early advantage in doubles, when the Cardinal pair of David Wilczynski and Brandon Sutter dispatched UCLA's Ben Goldberg and Austin Rapp on Court 3. No. 24 Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu countered for the Bruins, as they recorded a 6-4 win over Stanford's Yale Goldberg and Tom Fawcett to move to 8-2 on the dual-match season. That put the deciding point on Court 2, where the Cardinal duo of Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar held off Maxime Cressy and Gage Brymer, 6-4.

Sutter defeated No. 116 Cressy in straight sets on Court 6 to push the Cardinal lead to 2-0. On Court 2, Martin Redlicki gave UCLA (8-3) its first point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 7-5 decision over the Cardinal's Sameer Kumar. Redlicki, who lost his first singles match of the dual-match season in the Bruins' Feb. 19 loss to California, moved to 9-1 on the campaign with the win.

With a renewed energy, Austin Rapp earned the Bruins' next point despite a dropped first set, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Evan Zhu then knocked off No. 73 Michael Genender of Stanford (6-3) in another three-set decision, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, to put the Cardinal on the brink of elimination with both Courts 1 and 4 in third sets.

In the end, the decision came on Court 4, where UCLA's Logan Staggs clinched it for the Bruins. The junior fought back from a lost second-set tiebreak against a charging No. 77 Jack Barber, but ultimately clinched the match following a back-and-forth deciding set, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4. Staggs moved to 7-2 in singles play on the dual-match season with the win.

Next up for the Bruins is a trip to La Jolla, Calif. for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship. Play will begin Friday, Mar. 3, and extend through the weekend. UCLA will return to the dual-match portion of its schedule when it visits USC on Mar. 9 (3:00 p.m.).
