Bruins Fall to Trojans, 4-1

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 13 UCLA men's tennis team fell on the road to No. 14 USC Thursday, 4-1, in the teams' second non-conference clash of the season. Gage Brymer picked up the Bruins' lone point at Marks Stadium.
Unlike the teams' first meeting, the Trojans did not allow the doubles decision to reach Court 1. Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven defeated the Bruin duo of Brymer and Austin Rapp, which was making its doubles debut, by a 6-1 score. Then, in a rematch of a Pacific Coast Doubles semifinal contest, USC's team of Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede avenged its loss with a 6-3 win on Court 3 to clinch the doubles point.
Thibault Forget earned the Trojans' second point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Austin Rapp on Court 5 to begin singles play. Then, in the only singles battle of ranked opponents, USC's No. 16 Brandon Holt defeated the Bruins' No. 42 Martin Redlicki on Court 1, 6-4, 6-3, in a rematch of their three-set duel at ITA Indoors that Redlicki ultimately captured.
With the Trojans leading 3-0, No. 11 Brymer kept the Bruins alive with a straight-set win over Crystal on Court 2, 7-5, 6-2. The Bruins would not be able to sweep the rest of the matches, however, as No. 45 Logan Smith held off UCLA's Evan Zhu on Court 3, 6-4, 7-5, to secure the match with a 4-1 victory.
The Bruins will have a quick turnaround when No. 9 Baylor visits Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Saturday. The March 11 match will begin at 3:30 p.m., in the second half of a doubleheader with the No. 28 UCLA women's tennis team.
